Cris Worley Fine Arts is pleased to announce Shannon Cannings: Triggered featuring new works in oil on canvas. The exhibition will open with an artist’s reception on Saturday, February 16, 2019 from 5-8 pm. Triggered will be on view through March 23, 2019.
Shannon Cannings is best known for her brightly colored, realistic depictions of plastic toy guns. Constantly seduced by the colors and textures of an omnipotent consumer culture, she gleans from a multitude of stimuli— from shiny plastic objects wrapped in equally alluring plastic wrapping, to obsessive reflections on color theory. But, Cannings is not just concerned with the formal aspects of the work. On the contrary, she engages the viewer to explore the complexities of a gun culture that has become more and more pervasive in everyday America.
Shannon Cannings was born and raised in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Syracuse University. Shannon has been included in over fifty juried and invitational exhibitions throughout the United States. In 2018, she had a solo exhibition at McCormack Gallery, Midland College, Midland, Texas and in 2017, the Tyler Museum of Art, Tyler, Texas, included her in a three-person exhibition entitled, Making a Splash. In 2015, Shannon presented a solo show at the Center for Contemporary Arts in Abilene, Texas, and a two-person show with her husband, William Cannings, at the Underwood Center for the Arts in Lubbock, Texas. Shannon Cannings lives and works in Lubbock, Texas with her husband and two daughters, along with the family dog and a new kitten. For 18 years, she has taught hundreds of students as an adjunct professor of art at Texas Tech University.
