Robert Lansden b. 1959 — Robert Lansden’s work references a type of repetition — one that creates order out of the world around us. In this moment of repetition, the artist finds himself within a world of rules he created, while at the same time allowing for spontaneity in his craft. Lansden uses this repetition in conversation with ideas of spacetime and nonduality — that leads the artist to create based on this idea of opposites. For Lansden, nonduality sees the reconciliation and unity of two given things, allowing for a sense of interconnectedness. In 2001, Lansden began to study Joseph Campbell, who believed that our existence is defined over time by pairs of opposites. Through his study of Campbell and Buddhism, Lansden created this practice of separate yet overlapping compositions, that are rooted in repetition and meditation.
Lansden’s work often play with color and shape. Different forms and hues interact with one another — creating tensions that seem to burst off the paper. His use of absence and presence creates a visual effect that provoke the viewer, inviting them to look closer. We are even more intrigued when we see that the medium is ink, watercolor, or gouache on paper. Lansden is not digitally creating these works but using painstakingly composed line drawings to create these web-like patterns. While his work appears similar to algorithmic art, Lansden does this style without the computer — as he runs the algorithm in his head. For Lansden, this algorithm is rooted in his studies of nonduality and opposites, as his making process is a devotional act.
Robert Lansden lives and works in Norwalk, CT. He received his Bachelor of Fine Art from the Atlanta College of Art in 1989, a Master of Library Science from Palmer School of Library & Information Science in New York, NY in 1999 and a Master of Fine Art from Tulane University in 2005. His work has been exhibited throughout the US including the Nexus Center for Contemporary Art, Atlanta, Arkansas Arts Center, Little Rock, AR the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans, and the Kentler International Drawing Space, Brooklyn, NY, among others. His works are in the collection of UT Southwestern, Dallas; Fidelity Investments, Boston; and Superior Energy Service, New Orleans; among others.
